Time Duration Calculator

Calculate the exact amount of time between two clock times. Enter a start time and an end time to see the duration in hours, minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours.

This calculator is useful for measuring work hours, study sessions, appointments, meetings, travel periods, event durations, breaks, and other activities that have a defined start and end time.

Overnight periods are supported. If an activity continues past midnight, select "End time is on the next day". For example, 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is a duration of 4 hours.
02

Enter Your Times

Select the time when the activity starts and the time when it ends. The calculator will determine the elapsed duration.

The time at which the activity begins.
The time at which the activity finishes.
Select this when the activity crosses midnight, such as 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM.
CALCULATION
Duration = End Time − Start Time
Times are converted into minutes before the difference is calculated. For an overnight period, 24 hours are added to the end time before calculating the duration.

What This Calculator Does

A time duration calculation tells you how much elapsed time exists between a starting point and an ending point. Rather than simply subtracting the displayed clock numbers, this calculator converts both times into minutes and calculates the difference.

Same-day duration

Used when the end time occurs later on the same day. For example, 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM is 4 hours 30 minutes.

Overnight duration

Used when the activity passes midnight. For example, 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM is 4 hours.

Tips for Accurate Time Calculations

10

Understanding Decimal Hours

Decimal hours are useful when entering time into payroll, accounting, spreadsheets, or other systems that require hours to be represented as a decimal number.

15 minutes 0.25 hours
30 minutes 0.50 hours
45 minutes 0.75 hours
1 hour 30 minutes 1.50 hours

Decimal hours are different from clock notation. For example, 1.30 decimal hours is not the same as 1 hour 30 minutes. The calculator converts minutes correctly by dividing the total number of minutes by 60.

11

Limitations

This calculator measures the elapsed time between two clock times. It does not automatically account for:

For a simple same-day or single overnight period, the calculator provides the elapsed duration directly.

12

Privacy and Local Calculation

This calculator performs the time calculation in your browser. Your selected times do not need to be sent to a server for the calculation to work. This makes it convenient for quickly calculating durations without creating an account or submitting personal information.
