Word to Excel Converter

The Resouria Word to Excel Converter helps you move useful information from a Microsoft Word DOCX document into an editable Excel workbook. It is particularly useful when a Word document contains tables, lists, records, schedules, inventories, or other structured information that you want to continue working with in spreadsheet software.

The converter reads the DOCX document in your browser, extracts its tables and ordinary paragraphs, and uses that information to build a new XLSX workbook. The original Word document is not modified.

How to Convert Word to Excel

  1. Select your DOCX file. Choose the Microsoft Word document you want to convert.
  2. Review the extracted content. Resouria identifies tables and ordinary document paragraphs and displays a preview.
  3. Choose your Excel options. Decide whether ordinary text should be included, how table worksheets should be named, and whether empty table rows should be retained.
  4. Click Convert to Excel. The information is assembled into an XLSX workbook directly in your browser.
  5. Download the Excel workbook. Open the resulting file in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, or another compatible spreadsheet application.

What Can Be Extracted?

The converter focuses on information that can be represented naturally in a spreadsheet.

  • Word tables and their cell contents
  • Ordinary document paragraphs
  • Multiple tables as separate worksheets
  • Text that can be represented as spreadsheet rows
  • Basic table structure

Each detected Word table is converted into its own worksheet. When document text is included, it is placed in a separate worksheet called Document Text.

Example

Suppose a Word document contains a student list with columns such as:

Student Class Score
Student A JSS 2 82
Student B JSS 2 76

The converter can place this table into an Excel worksheet where the information can then be sorted, filtered, calculated, or edited.

Common Uses

  • Moving student records from Word tables into Excel
  • Converting employee or staff lists into spreadsheets
  • Extracting inventory tables from Word documents
  • Converting schedules and timetables into editable data
  • Moving manually prepared reports into spreadsheet form
  • Extracting lists from Word documents for further analysis
  • Preparing Word-based records for sorting and filtering

Tips for Better Results

  • Use DOCX files. The converter is designed for the modern Microsoft Word DOCX format.
  • Use structured tables. Word documents containing clearly structured tables generally produce better spreadsheet results.
  • Review the preview. Check the extracted information before creating the Excel file.
  • Remove unnecessary empty rows. The default option removes completely empty table rows.
  • Keep complex layouts simple. Word documents containing many floating objects, text boxes, columns, images, or decorative elements may not translate naturally into spreadsheet cells.
  • Keep large documents manageable. Very large DOCX files may require considerable browser memory while they are being processed.

Is My Word Document Uploaded?

No. This converter is designed to process the selected DOCX file locally in your web browser. The document does not need to be uploaded to the Resouria server for extraction or Excel generation.

Because processing happens locally, your document can remain on your device while the browser performs the conversion.

Limitations

Converting Word documents into spreadsheets is not the same as reproducing the original Word page layout. Excel is designed around rows, columns and worksheets, so some Word features do not have a direct spreadsheet equivalent.

  • DOC files are not supported; use DOCX instead.
  • Complex Word page layouts may not be reproduced.
  • Images are not converted into spreadsheet data.
  • Charts and SmartArt are not converted into equivalent Excel objects.
  • Floating text boxes may not be represented correctly.
  • Headers and footers are not treated as normal spreadsheet data.
  • Advanced Word formatting may be lost.
  • Tracked changes and specialized Word features are not reproduced as Excel features.
  • Very large or unusually complex DOCX files may require more browser memory and processing time.

The generated workbook contains extracted information rather than being a pixel-perfect copy of the original Word document.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This converter is designed for Microsoft Word DOCX files. If your file is an older DOC document, open it in Microsoft Word or another compatible application and save it as DOCX first.

Yes. Each detected Word table is normally placed in a separate Excel worksheet. You can choose worksheet names such as "Table 1, Table 2..." or "Sheet 1, Sheet 2...".

Yes. Select Tables only under Document Text. The generated workbook will then focus on the detected Word tables.

The converter focuses on extracting useful content rather than reproducing the exact Word page design. Text and table structure can be transferred, but advanced formatting, images, floating objects and complex layouts may not be preserved.

No. The conversion is performed locally in your browser. The DOCX file does not need to be uploaded to the Resouria server.

Yes. The result is an XLSX workbook. You can open it in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets and other applications that support the XLSX format.

Word and Excel organize information differently. Word is primarily a document and page-layout application, while Excel is based on worksheets, rows and columns. The converter therefore extracts usable information instead of attempting to reproduce the complete Word page design.
