Markup Calculator

Calculate how much profit you make above your cost price and determine the markup percentage on a product, service, or other item.

What is markup?

Markup is the percentage added to the cost of an item to arrive at its selling price. For example, if an item costs ₦10,000 and you sell it for ₦12,000, your profit is ₦2,000 and your markup is 20%.

Important: Markup is calculated using the cost price, while profit margin is calculated using the selling price.

01

Calculate Markup

Enter your cost price and selling price to calculate your profit, markup percentage, and profit margin.

The amount you paid or spent to obtain the item.
The amount charged to the customer.
FORMULAS
Profit = Selling Price − Cost Price
Markup % = (Profit ÷ Cost Price) × 100
Profit Margin % = (Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100
Markup is based on the cost price. Profit margin is based on the selling price. They are related, but they are not the same percentage.
Guide

How to Calculate Markup

You only need two figures: your cost price and your selling price.

1. Enter the cost price

Enter what the product, service, or item costs you. This could include the purchase price or another cost you use as the basis for pricing.

2. Enter the selling price

Enter the amount at which you intend to sell the product or service.

3. Calculate

Resouria calculates the difference between the two prices and expresses that difference as a percentage of the cost price.

4. Compare markup and margin

The results also show your profit margin so you can see why markup and margin should not be used interchangeably.

Markup vs Profit Margin

THE DIFFERENCE
Markup = Profit ÷ Cost Price
Margin = Profit ÷ Selling Price
Because the two percentages use different denominators, a markup percentage is normally higher than the corresponding profit margin when a business makes a profit.
Example

Markup Calculation Example

Suppose you purchase a product for ₦50,000 and sell it for ₦65,000.

STEP 1 — CALCULATE PROFIT
₦65,000 − ₦50,000 = ₦15,000
STEP 2 — CALCULATE MARKUP
(₦15,000 ÷ ₦50,000) × 100 = 30%

The product therefore has a 30% markup on its cost price. Its profit margin, however, is approximately 23.08% of the selling price.

Learn

Why Markup Matters

Markup helps businesses decide how much to charge above their cost. A consistent markup can make pricing easier when selling multiple products or services.

For example, a retailer may decide to apply a particular markup percentage to different products. The calculator can help check whether the resulting selling price gives the intended level of profit.

However, markup should not be the only factor considered when setting prices. Operating expenses, taxes, payment processing costs, shipping, discounts, competition and customer demand can all affect the final price decision.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Markup is the amount added to a product's cost to determine its selling price, expressed as a percentage of the cost.

For example, a ₦10,000 cost with a 20% markup results in a ₦12,000 selling price.

Markup is calculated from the cost price, while profit margin is calculated from the selling price.

Markup: Profit ÷ Cost Price × 100
Margin: Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100

Yes. If the selling price is lower than the cost price, the calculated markup is negative. This means the transaction produces a loss based on the entered cost and selling prices.

No.

If an item costs ₦100 and has a 50% markup, its selling price is ₦150. The profit is ₦50, but ₦50 is only 33.33% of the ₦150 selling price. Therefore, a 50% markup produces a 33.33% profit margin.

It depends on what you are using the calculation for.

If you are calculating the markup on a product's purchase cost, you may use that purchase cost as your cost price. For a complete pricing decision, however, you may also need to account for shipping, storage, salaries, advertising, taxes, payment fees and other expenses.

If you know the cost price and desired markup, you can calculate the selling price with:

Selling Price = Cost Price × (1 + Markup ÷ 100)

For example, a ₦20,000 cost with a 25% markup gives:

₦20,000 × 1.25 = ₦25,000.
