Calculate Average

Enter a list of numbers to calculate the average (mean), median, sum, lowest value, and highest value.

You can enter whole numbers or decimal numbers. Separate values using commas, spaces, or line breaks. The calculation is performed directly in your browser.

🔒 Your numbers stay on your device.
This calculator performs its calculations locally in your browser. The numbers you enter do not need to be uploaded to a Resouria server.
Examples: 75, 82, 68, 91, 84, 75 82 68 91 84, or one number per line.
AVERAGE FORMULA
Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values
The median is calculated separately by arranging the values from smallest to largest and identifying the middle value, or the average of the two middle values when there is an even number of values.

What Is an Average?

In everyday use, "average" usually refers to the arithmetic mean. It is calculated by adding all the values in a data set and dividing the total by the number of values.

For example, if five test scores are 75, 82, 68, 91, and 84, their sum is 400. Because there are five scores, the average is 400 ÷ 5 = 80.

Average = Sum ÷ Number of values

Average = (75 + 82 + 68 + 91 + 84) ÷ 5

Average = 400 ÷ 5

Average = 80

How to Calculate an Average

  1. Add all the numbers together to find their sum.
  2. Count how many numbers are in the data set.
  3. Divide the sum by the number of values.
  4. The result is the arithmetic average, also called the mean.

What Is the Median?

The median is the middle value after a collection of numbers has been arranged from smallest to largest.

If there is an odd number of values, the median is the single middle value. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.

Example with 5 values:
10, 20, 30, 40, 50

Median = 30

Example with 4 values:
10, 20, 30, 40

Median = (20 + 30) ÷ 2 = 25

Average vs Median

Both the average and median describe the center of a group of numbers, but they respond differently to unusually high or low values.

Statistic How It Is Calculated Useful When
Average / Mean Sum divided by number of values You want the overall numerical average.
Median Middle value after sorting You want a measure that is less affected by extreme values.
Lowest Smallest value in the data set You need the minimum result.
Highest Largest value in the data set You need the maximum result.

Why Can the Average and Median Be Different?

The average uses every value in the calculation, so an unusually large or unusually small number can affect it significantly.

The median depends primarily on the position of values after sorting. This makes it less sensitive to extreme values.

Data set:
10, 12, 13, 15, 100

Average = 30
Median = 13

In this example, the value 100 pulls the average upward, while the median remains closer to the values in the middle of the data set.

Privacy and Local Processing

Your calculations are performed directly in your web browser. The numbers you enter do not need to be sent to a Resouria server for processing.

This makes the calculator convenient for ordinary calculations and reduces the need to transmit the entered data over the internet. If you use a shared computer, however, avoid entering information that you do not want other users of that device to see.

Frequently Asked Questions

The arithmetic average is calculated by adding all values together and dividing the sum by the number of values. Average = Sum ÷ Number of values.

Yes. You can enter decimal values such as 12.5, 18.75 and 24.3. The calculator also supports negative numbers.

The mean is calculated by adding all values and dividing by their count. The median is the middle value after the numbers have been sorted. The mean can be more strongly affected by unusually high or low values.

Yes. You can paste one number per line, use commas, or separate values with spaces. This is useful when copying a list of scores or measurements.

No. This calculator calculates a simple arithmetic average in which every value has equal weight. A weighted average requires separate weights for the individual values.

For a simple arithmetic average of finite values, the mean will normally fall between the lowest and highest values in the data set. If the average appears outside that range, check the entered values and calculation.
Remember: An average is a summary of a data set, not a complete description of it. Looking at the median, lowest and highest values alongside the average can give you a better understanding of the numbers.
