Unit Converter

Convert measurements between commonly used units for length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, and time. Enter a value, choose the original unit and select the unit you want to convert to.

This unit converter is useful for everyday measurements, schoolwork, construction, cooking, travel, fitness, engineering, business calculations, and other situations where the same quantity needs to be expressed in a different unit.

How it works: most conversions are performed by converting the original value to a standard base unit and then converting that value into the selected target unit. Temperature uses specific conversion formulas because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin have different zero points.
02

Enter Your Measurement

Select a conversion category, choose your units, and enter the number you want to convert.

You can enter whole numbers, decimals, and negative values where they are physically meaningful.

What This Unit Converter Does

Different unit systems can describe the same physical quantity in different ways. For example, a distance can be expressed in metres, kilometres, miles, feet, or inches. The quantity has not changed; only the way it is represented has changed.

Length

Convert metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, miles, yards, feet, and inches.

Weight and Mass

Convert kilograms, grams, milligrams, tonnes, pounds, and ounces.

Temperature

Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin using their respective temperature formulas.

Area

Convert square metres, square kilometres, square feet, square yards, acres, and hectares.

Volume

Convert litres, millilitres, cubic metres, US gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.

Speed and Time

Convert common speed units such as km/h and mph, as well as seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks.

04

How to Use the Unit Converter

  1. Choose the type of measurement you want to convert, such as Length or Temperature.
  2. Select the original unit in the From field.
  3. Select the unit you want in the To field.
  4. Enter the numerical value you want to convert.
  5. Click Convert to see the result and conversion details.

How Unit Conversion Works

For most categories, the calculator uses a base-unit method. The original value is first converted into a standard unit for that category and then converted from the standard unit into the requested target unit.

GENERAL METHOD
Base Value = Original Value × Original Unit Factor
Converted Value = Base Value ÷ Target Unit Factor

For example, the base unit for length in this calculator is the metre. A kilometre is 1,000 metres, while an inch is 0.0254 metres. The appropriate factors allow the calculator to move between these units consistently.

Temperature is different because its scales have different reference points. It therefore uses dedicated Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin formulas rather than a simple multiplication factor.

Conversion Examples

Here are some examples of common unit conversions and the type of result you can expect.

Length 1 kilometre
Equivalent 1,000 metres
Weight / Mass 1 kilogram
Equivalent 1,000 grams
Temperature 0 °C
Equivalent 32 °F
Land Area 1 hectare
Equivalent 10,000 m²

Tips for Accurate Unit Conversion

12

Understanding Temperature Conversion

Temperature conversion is different from ordinary unit conversion because the scales do not share the same zero point.

CELSIUS TO FAHRENHEIT
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
FAHRENHEIT TO CELSIUS
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
CELSIUS TO KELVIN
K = °C + 273.15

The converter applies the appropriate formula automatically when temperature is selected.

13

Limitations and Important Notes

This converter provides mathematical unit conversions using the units and conversion factors included in the tool. It does not determine which measurement standard is appropriate for a particular professional situation.

14

Privacy and Local Calculation

Unit conversions are performed directly in your browser. The calculator does not need to send the measurement you enter to a server in order to perform the conversion. This allows you to use the tool quickly without creating an account or submitting personal information.

Frequently Asked Questions

A unit converter changes a measurement from one unit into another unit representing the same quantity. For example, it can convert kilometres to miles or kilograms to pounds.

For most measurements, the calculator first converts the original value into a standard base unit and then converts that base value into the selected target unit.

Mass describes the amount of matter in an object and is commonly expressed in kilograms or grams. Weight is technically a force caused by gravity. In everyday use, however, terms such as kilogram and pound are often casually described as weight units.

One kilometre is exactly 1,000 metres.

Yes. The gallon, quart, pint, and cup options in the volume section are based on US customary liquid measurements. This is important because gallon and cup definitions can differ between measurement systems.

Yes. Negative Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures can be converted. Kelvin, however, cannot be below absolute zero, which is 0 K or approximately −273.15 °C.

Area measures two-dimensional space, so the unit is squared. For example, a square metre measures an area, while a metre measures a length. The conversion factors therefore cannot be treated as ordinary length conversions.

Quick and Practical Unit Conversion

Whether you are converting kilometres to miles, kilograms to pounds, hectares to square metres, litres to gallons, or Celsius to Fahrenheit, this converter provides a quick way to express the same measurement in another unit. Always check the measurement system being used when the conversion is important to a professional or technical decision.
