Tip: For photographs, a semi-transparent white or black watermark placed near a corner is often easier to read without covering too much of the image.

What Is an Image Watermark?

An image watermark is text or another visual mark placed over an image to identify its owner, creator, business, website, or source. Watermarks are commonly used for branding, attribution, copyright notices, previews, product photography, and images shared online.

This Resouria tool adds a text watermark directly to your image using your browser's canvas technology. You can control the text, size, color, transparency, position, output format, and image quality before downloading the result.

How to Watermark an Image

  1. Select the image you want to watermark.
  2. Enter the text you want to display over the image.
  3. Choose an appropriate font size and text color.
  4. Adjust the opacity to make the watermark subtle or prominent.
  5. Select where the watermark should appear.
  6. Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP as the output format.
  7. Adjust quality when using a format that supports browser quality settings.
  8. Click Add Watermark.
  9. Review the preview and download the finished image.

Choosing the Right Watermark Position

The best position depends on the purpose of the watermark. A corner watermark is normally less distracting and works well for photographs, social media images, and business branding. A centered watermark can be more difficult to remove by simply cropping the edges, but it can also interfere more with the image.

Understanding Watermark Opacity

Opacity controls how strongly the watermark appears over the original image. A value of 100% makes the selected watermark color fully visible. Lower values allow more of the original image to show through.

For photographs, an opacity around 30% to 60% can often provide a reasonable balance between visibility and readability. However, the ideal value depends on the background, watermark color, and purpose of the image.

Choosing an Image Format

Format Useful For Important Consideration
JPG Photographs and general-purpose images. Uses lossy compression and does not preserve transparent backgrounds.
PNG Graphics, screenshots, and images where lossless output is useful. Files can be larger than JPG or WebP.
WebP Websites and modern web applications. Often provides efficient file sizes, but compatibility should be considered for older software.

Watermarking Tips

Common Uses for Image Watermarks

Watermarking vs. Image Editing

A watermark is a permanent part of the generated image. Once you download the watermarked version, the text has been rendered into the image pixels. It is therefore a good idea to keep your original image separately if you expect to need an unwatermarked version later.

This tool is designed specifically for adding a simple text watermark. It does not provide advanced photo-editing features such as object removal, background replacement, layer management, or professional color correction.

Privacy and Local Processing

The watermarking process takes place in your web browser. The image is loaded into browser memory and drawn onto an HTML canvas before the watermarked image is generated. The tool does not need to upload the original image to the Resouria server.

Because the processing happens locally, performance can depend on your device's available memory and browser. Avoid closing or refreshing the page while processing a very large image.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Resouria upload my image? No. The watermarking process is performed in your browser, so the image does not need to be uploaded to the Resouria server.
Can I change the watermark color? Yes. Use the color selector under Watermark Settings to choose the text color.
Can I make the watermark transparent? Yes. Use the opacity slider. Lower opacity makes the watermark more transparent.
Can I put the watermark in the center? Yes. The position selector provides nine positions, including the center of the image.
Does the quality setting affect PNG? Generally, no. Browser canvas PNG encoding does not use the quality parameter in the same way as JPG and WebP.
Will my original image be changed? No. The original file is not modified. A new watermarked image is generated for download.
Can I remove a watermark after downloading the image? The watermark is rendered into the generated image. Keep your original unwatermarked file if you may need it later.
Can I watermark an animated GIF? This tool is intended for static image output. Animated GIF behavior is not preserved when the image is rendered to the canvas and exported as JPG, PNG, or WebP.
Helpful tip: A good watermark should identify the image without making the image difficult to view. Start with a moderate font size and opacity, preview the result, and adjust the settings until the watermark is clearly visible but not unnecessarily distracting.
